Date: September 15, 2025
Location: PAMOL Plantations, Cameroon
Organized by: Gap Bridgers Africa (GABA)
Project Overview
As part of our mission to bridge health and wellbeing gaps across communities, Gap Bridgers Africa conducted a free eye care screening for the administrative staff of PAMOL Plantations.
This initiative aimed to promote occupational eye health, prevent avoidable blindness, and enhance workplace productivity among employees exposed to computers, sunlight, and chemicals daily.
Key Findings
A total of 45 staff members registered for the program, with 41 screened (91%). The assessment revealed a high prevalence of eye-related health concerns:
- 88% (36 staff) had at least one eye condition.
- Ocular surface disease and blepharitis (88%) were the most common, linked to prolonged screen time and UV exposure.
- Presbyopia (73%) affected mostly workers over 40 years of age.
- Glaucoma (50%), often undiagnosed, was detected in many cases — highlighting the importance of early detection.
- Refractive errors (22%) required prescription lenses.
- Additional findings included cataract, allergic conjunctivitis, trauma-related injuries, and diabetic retinopathy.
Impact and Recommendations
The project findings underscored the urgent need for continuous workplace eye health monitoring. Gap Bridgers Africa recommended:
✅ Regular eye screening and clinical follow-up for all employees.
✅ Provision of UV-protective and corrective lenses for office and field staff.
✅ Implementation of workplace safety policies that include protective eyewear.
✅ Support for further research on eye health among agricultural workers in Cameroon.
These preventive actions can reduce visual impairment, increase productivity, and improve overall wellbeing.
Project Outcome
The screening identified several previously undiagnosed eye conditions, including early-stage glaucoma, which can now be managed before irreversible damage occurs.
The activity also raised awareness about the importance of regular eye check-ups and protective eye care, empowering workers to take proactive steps in maintaining their vision health.
Gap Bridgers Africa remains committed to promoting equitable access to health services and improving the quality of life for individuals in all sectors of society.
